An avalanche in India has killed at least 10 people from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The accident took place on Draupadi Ka Danda-II in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on Tuesday. Eight of the 29 trapped have been rescued, while efforts are underway to find the others.
The climbers were in a group that included 34 trainees and seven instructors. The avalanche struck while they were making their way down from the summit. India’s Defense Ministry sent helicopters to aid in the search and rescue.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering principal Amit Bisht said, “10 killed in avalanche in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The loss of precious lives due to landslide which has struck the mountaineering expedition carried out by the Nehru Mountaineering Institute in Uttarkashi. My condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones.”
Draupadi Ka Danda-II is located in the Gangotri Range of the Garhwal Himalaya where several famous climbers are currently attempting routes. A Polish expedition with Adam Bielecki and another with Alex and Thomas Huber are ongoing.
