Boyd also served as the vice commander of the 8th Air Force, the head of Air University, and the deputy commander of the United States European Command.
He joined the Air Force as an aviation cadet in 1959. In November 1965, he was dispatched to Southeast Asia after learning to fly the F-100 Super Sabre and F-105 Thunderchief.
Boyd volunteered for an extraordinarily perilous mission in an F-105D on April 22, 1966, to bomb surface-to-air missile installations around Hanoi, North Korea’s capital. On his 105th mission over the North, according to his citation for the Air Force Cross—the second-highest medal after the Medal of Honor—Boyd valiantly pressed the attack despite the overwhelming enemy fire, including near encounters with two SAMS. He got hit after a series of passes. The power of the wind tore his helmet off as he ejected at high speed, and he was arrested shortly after landing in a rice paddy.

Boyd was held captive by the North Vietnamese for the next seven years, suffering torture, cruel interrogation, solitary confinement, hunger, and disease. He was imprisoned with Navy aviator John McCain, who later became a US senator and Republican presidential candidate, for 18 months.
Boyd was one of about 50 detainees forced to march through the capital in the 1966 “Hanoi March,” a propaganda event in which downed pilots were humiliated and attacked by citizens lining the march route, demonstrating Hanoi’s refusal to abide by the Geneva Convention prohibiting such treatment.
Following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, Boyd was returned. He returned to the Air Force after four years of recovery, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology and enrolling in the Air War College. Boyd’s eyesight was not well enough to allow him to resume USAF flying duties due to malnutrition during his imprisonment, although he flew private planes for many years afterward.
