The Magpies confirmed his employment on a three-year contract when he was only the club’s third full-time coach this century. He assisted Collingwood from 2011 to 2015, and this season he served as Hawthorn’s forward coach.

Craig is now the fifth Lions player to hold the senior coach role, including Chris Scott, Brad Scott, Michael Voss, and Justin Leppitsch.

Coaching Career of Craig Mcrae

Craig Mcrae served as a player development coach for the Richmond Football Club in 2007. Mcrae accepted the head coaching position at Coburg, a VFL associate club of Richmond, when Jade Rawlings, a former coach of Richmond and fellow AFL assistant, was chosen interim head coach at Richmond in the midst of the 2009 AFL season.

Mcrae agreed to a position as a development coach with the Brisbane Lions in 2010 before accepting a position as head of development at Collingwood in 2011. For five years, he remained with the group.

He relocated back to Richmond in 2016 and began serving as both an assistant coach in the AFL and the head coach of the club’s VFL reserves team.

Prior to winning a championship in 2019, he coached the squad to a losing grand final in 2017. He also received awards for assistant coach of the year from the VFL and the AFL coaches association in that same year.

In 2021, Craig began serving as the Hawthorn Football Club’s forward-line coach.

McRae was the Richmond Football Club’s player development coach in 2007. When Richmond’s former coach and fellow AFL assistant Jade Rawlings was named interim head coach at Richmond in the middle of the 2009 AFL season, McRae accepted the head coaching role at Coburg, a VFL associate club of Richmond.

2006

Up to the end of the 2006 campaign, McRae worked in the sports administration industry and held a number of football broadcasting positions, including co-hosting a football programme on Triple M with Jason Akermanis, a former teammate from Brisbane.

2004

McRae was recognised for his tenacity and tough tackling. The well-liked small forward/goalsneak, who had participated in Brisbane’s 2001, 2002, and 2003 premierships, announced his retirement from the game of football after the 2004 Grand Final defeat to Port Adelaide.

McRae, who was born and raised in Glenelg of the South Australian National Football League, was selected by AFL team Brisbane with the 22nd overall pick in the 1994 draught.
