Endings Explained Of Movie Inheritance(2020): Is Morgan (Carson) Dead?
A trap-door thriller with an unconventional narrative, “Inheritance” (2020) is set in 2008 in Manhattan, New York. The protagonist of the tale is Manhattan district attorney Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins), who is poised to win a significant case. When her father unexpectedly passes away, she learns that he left her one-tenth of the wealth he gave her brother, William (Chace Crawford).
The true shock, though, comes when Harold (Michael Beach), her father’s attorney, pulls her away and hands her an envelope. She discovers a bracelet door lock and a USB drive with a film inside of it. In the video, Lauren’s father, Archer (Patrick Warburton), confesses to making a mistake and tells her to carry it with her to her grave. Lauren follows her father’s directions to a covert subterranean bunker feeling both interested and uneasy. There, she meets Morgan Warner (Simon Pegg), a man who claims that Archer had imprisoned him there for 30 years due to their shared tragic background. Inheritance Plot Synopsis
In the opening moments of the movie, Lauren is on the verge of succeeding in her legal battle against an investment banking firm that has deceived its clients out of billions of dollars. William is vying for re-election while serving as a congressman. The family patriarch passes away at this critical juncture. Although William once tells Lauren that their father was healthier than him, the initial examinations indicate that he had a heart attack. Harold reads Archer’s will after the funeral, wake, and other events are over. He bequeathed his estate to his wife Catherine (Connie Nelson). He handed Lauren a million dollars, but only gave William $20 million. Scott, Lauren’s husband (Marque Richardson), and the rest of the family are furious. Lauren, on the other hand, seemed to have been anticipating this.
The bond between Lauren and Archer has never been flawless. Banker Archer disliked the thought of his daughter pursuing his pals. He also blamed Scott for her decision to become a district attorney rather than pursue a private practise because he didn’t like it. Lauren, who is shocked to learn about Morgan, understands that this is her true inheritance. Because she was the oldest, Archer wanted her to bear the responsibility, and he even says as much in the video.

She first discovers Morgan as a groggy, sleepy mess. He is wearing a collar that is chained to the wall and is around his neck. The prisoners’ reach is shown with a white line on the ground. When Lauren asks who he is, Morgan responds with his own demands, including a bottle of 30-year-old scotch that has been aged for each year he has been held captive. He seems to know a startling amount of information about the Monroe family, especially considering that he claims to have been imprisoned for three decades.
The Monroe family as a whole is different from Lauren. William would have thrown the key away without hesitation if he had discovered Morgan. But Lauren is a lovely person who genuinely wants to help others. She became a district attorney for this reason, as well as the knowledge that her father would be upset. She also wanted Archer’s endorsement since she wanted her father to be pleased with what she had accomplished.
Lauren brings everything the man requested the next time he enters the bunker, at which point he begins to speak. He introduces himself as Morgan Warner and says that he has been in the bunker ever since the night he saw her father accidently kill a man while driving while intoxicated. Morgan asserts that before knocking the dead guy out and putting him in the bunker, Archer buried the body. Over time, Archer started to use him as a confessor, spilling all of his darkest, most intimate secrets.
Inheritance Ending: Why Did Archer Keep Morgan Captive for 30 Years?
Lauren first doesn’t accept what Morgan says after hearing it. But then Morgan starts to show her evidence of things he is aware of. Lauren is informed of Sofia Flore, her father’s mistress and the mother of Alex, his hidden son. She also finds out that her father had opened up an account for Sofia with the very people she is currently suing. He then takes her to the spot where Archer interred the poor pedestrian’s corpse. Additionally, Morgan says that Archer assisted William in buying off union officials, a charge that has been levelled against the current Congressman. When Lauren confronts her brother, he comes clean.
After considering all of these factors, Lauren chooses to fire Morgan. She arranges for Morgan to have a million dollar account at the Cayman Islands with Harold’s assistance and books a private plane to transport him there. In addition to giving him an additional $100,000 cash, she also threatens him with grave repercussions if he ever returns.
Lauren emailed her friend the detective Morgan’s fingerprints in the meanwhile. When the findings do come back, Catherine is the first to see them. The remainder of Lauren’s family has not yet heard from her. Upon seeing the Morgan photo, Catherine becomes frightened. She tells Lauren that the man’s real name is Carson and that he sexually assaulted her thirty years prior. Later, Lauren and Catherine are both captured by Morgan or Carson. It turns out that Archer beat up Carson after learning what he had done to Catherine and was on his way to the police when he struck the pedestrian. He kept the other man in the bunker since he knew he couldn’t go to the police.
How Did Archer Die? Did Morgan / Carson Kill Him?
Lauren finds out that her father was discovered dead in the family’s summer home at the beginning of the movie as she is addressing a press conference about the case. As was already mentioned, a heart attack was determined to be the cause of death. But in the pivotal scene, Carson admits that he actually killed Archer while they were playing chess by injecting him with some of the poison that Archer had obtained to kill him.
Archer, unfortunately for Carson, was able to stand up and exit the bunker before he passed away. Lauren arrived just as Carson started to think he had no hope of escaping the bunker. Carson knew this when he first met Lauren and took advantage, telling her a scenario in which he looks to be the victim because Archer’s sudden death prevented him from revealing his daughter who he really was.

Is Carson or Morgan dead?
Carson is indeed deceased. His account seemed to be truthful in the beginning. He knew about Sofia because he was friends with Archer. And, he appears to be Archer’s confessor, which supports the claim that he is. Also, he wouldn’t be as familiar with the Monroes as he is. Regarding the pedestrian and the location of the man’s body, he was honest. But he buried the real reason he was in the bunker behind all those bits of truth.
In the end, it seems that Archer didn’t kill Carson because he decided to spare his life by allowing him to rot in the bunker while knowing that everyone had forgotten about him. The fact that Catherine murders Carson is the height of irony. Catherine shoots Carson multiple times right after he informs Lauren that he is her father. Finally receiving her due, Carson’s former victim. After that, Carson’s body and everything else are burned within the bunker by Lauren and Catherine. It’s unlikely that anyone will search for him after this because he has been deceased for 30 years.

Who Is Lauren’s Father?
Carson asserts his paternity just before Catherine shoots him, saying he is Lauren’s biological father. Catherine doesn’t exactly refute this later. Lauren is instead reassured by her that she is a Monroe. This is probably referring to her upbringing rather than her father. Archer and Catherine probably had questions when they learned about the pregnancy 30 years ago, and it’s probable that they had the paternity test performed. Carson is Lauren’s father, so absolutely.
Ultimately, Archer raised her as his daughter. He didn’t argue with her over the fact that she was his wife’s rapist’s child. The message is clear: Archer never held Lauren accountable for Carson’s transgressions. He was unhappy that she wasn’t as cunning and aspirational as he was. He was happy for her successes, but he knew she was capable of more. Perhaps this explains why he left her in his will such a “small” sum of money (at least in comparison to her brother).
