He made his home on the Island and was always such a friendly face in our community. We send our sincere condolences to all those who grieve his loss.”
Jean had an 11-year NHL career, the majority of which he spent with the Islanders. His brother Denis was a Hall of Fame defenseman for the team. He also played for the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, Cleveland Barons, and Minnesota North Stars.
His final two seasons, 1980 and 1981, were the Islanders’ first two Stanley Cup seasons. He had 46 goals and 167 assists in his career. He also has the distinction of being the first Islander defenseman to score a hat trick, aside from his brother.
Following his playing career, Potvin worked for eight years as a radio announcer for the Islanders.
