Early years
During the years 2016 through 2020, Sims participated in high school football at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Since he was a sophomore on the squad, he has held the position as starting quarterback for the team. Willie Taggart, who was the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles at the time, drew him in. He had originally hoped to play college football for the Miami Hurricanes, but the team did not show interest in him. Instead, he chose to play for the Florida State Seminoles. He announced his intention to attend Florida State in February 2019, with the expectation that he will serve as James Blackman’s backup quarterback. In the latter part of that year, he took part in a competition for quarterbacks called Elite 11. On December 11, when Florida State fired Taggart and hired Mike Norvell as the new head coach, he reneged on his commitment to play for the Seminoles.
