Ice climber Stas Beskin has had a stellar year on steep ice and mixed and is arguably one of the top winter climbers in Canada. Over the past few years, he’s nearly perfected a technique that allows him to climb skinny pillars.
In this video, which includes clips of some bold solos, he talks in depth about the technique he uses to climb such fragile features. Beskin has put his theories to the test and has pulled off some historic ascents. Only very experienced expert ice climbing should be trying to climb unprotectable ice pillars such as these.
Be sure to grab a copy of the upcoming October/November issue of Gripped magazine, which has a feature story on Beskin by Ian Welsted.
