Marina Ovsyannikova is a Russian television producer who previously worked for Channel One Russia.
‘They are lying to you here,’ an employee declares on live Russian state television.
On Monday, a lady stormed the set of Russia’s flagship evening news program, demanding “stop the war” and blasting government “propaganda” – a dramatic display of popular outrage as the Kremlin tightens down on any criticism of its invasion of Ukraine.
Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor and producer with the station, has been jailed, according to OVD-Info, a human rights organization that records protest action and detentions in Russia.
Before storming the set of Channel One, Ovsyannikova recorded a video message in which she said, “What is going on in Ukraine is a crime.”
“Unfortunately, I have been working at Channel One during recent years, working on Kremlin propaganda,” Ovsyannikova said. “And now I am very ashamed. I am ashamed that I’ve allowed the lies to be said on the TV screens. I am ashamed that I let the Russian people be zombified.”
Rallying Cry
She closed with a rallying cry, alluding to Russia’s severe price for dissent:
“It is only in our power to stop this madness. Take to the streets. Do not be afraid. They can’t jail us all.”
The demonstration was lauded as a hazardous show of defiance around the world, as Russia continues to suppress regime critics and wrongly frames its invasion as a limited operation to “denazify” a neighbor. The Kremlin has shut down independent sources of information on the fighting in Ukraine and threatened anyone who publishes “fake news” that contradicts Russia’s official version of the conflict with 15 years in prison. Thousands of individuals protesting the violence have been arrested in Russia, according to OVD-Info, which says the invasion and its consequences have “irrevocably changed” Russian culture.
In one of his regular video updates broadcast on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked “the woman who entered the Channel One studio.”
“I am grateful to those Russians who do not stop trying to convey the truth,” he said.
