According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, a suspected DUI driver was arrested after a wrong-way crash on International Speedway Boulevard near Daytona Beach.
Nathan Zacharias, 27, was arrested on DUI charges on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Zacharias was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, causing drivers to swerve to avoid a head-on collision, according to a press release. According to deputies, one automobile carrying four people was unable to avoid colliding with Zacharias, and two of the four passengers were sent to the hospital.
One victim tells a deputy that the suspect clipped his car and hit his side mirror, according to a body camera video posted by the sheriff’s office.
“He was coming head-on at us, and I swerved to avoid him,” the victim is heard saying.
“Serve and protect,” the suspect is heard saying as he is being taken into custody in the abridged footage. What a farce. What a bunch of jerks you people are.” As he sits in the back seat of the patrol car, he can also be seen giggling.
Zacharias’ “speaking was slurred, his eyes were blurry and bloodshot, he was unsteady on his feet,” according to the sheriff’s office, and he smelled of alcohol. His truck had both open and unopened beer cans, according to deputies.
Due to a previous DUI in August 2021, his license was restricted to business use only, according to officials.
He is facing a number of accusations, including a DUI with bodily injury or property damage and failing to comply with driver’s license requirements.
