He triumphed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2019, the 2020–21 Formula E World Championship, and the 2010–11 Karting World Championships. He also serves as the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s backup driver. In September 2022, De Vries made his Formula One debut by gaining points for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix.

FIA World Endurance Championship

De Vries joined with Racing Team Nederland on March 15th, 2018 to participate in the LMP2 division. On October 6, 2019, he and this squad scored their maiden victory in this class at the 6 Hours of Fuji. De Vries drove the final stint and brought the vehicle home.

De Vries was introduced as the test and backup driver for Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH on July 6, 2020. He performs testing on Toyota’s hypercar as well as the TS050 hybrid.

The ACO officials forbade Philippe Cimadomo, a driver for TDS Racing x Vaillante, from starting during the test week leading up to the 2022 24 hours of Le Mans. He was requested to fill in because he was already on the track due to his reserve position with the Toyota Hypercar squad. The car was switched from Pro/Am to Pro due to Philippe Cimadomo’s bronze classification and De Vries’ platinum rank.

Formula E

2019–20 season

After failing to secure a spot in Formula One for the 2020 Formula One season, De Vries was revealed on September 11 as a driver for the new Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team for the 2019–20 Formula E season alongside Stoffel Vandoorne. The team’s record at the end of the campaign was 1-2, with Vandoorne leading De Vries, who placed 11th overall with 60 points.

2020–21 season

De Vries stayed on with Stoffel Vandoorne at the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team for the 2020–21 campaign. He won his first-ever race in the series after qualifying on the pole for the first race of the season-opening Diriyah ePrix doubleheader. De Vries did not participate in qualifying prior to the second race because Edoardo Mortara’s incident during a practice start procedure resulted in the suspension of Mercedes and Venturi Racing, both of which were using Mercedes powertrains. The Dutchman placed tenth in the race despite other cars receiving penalties. Due to collisions with Sam Bird and his colleague Vandoorne in the two races at the Rome round, de Vries was unable to score any points. In Valencia, where he was one of the few drivers to not run out of usable energy before the finish line of the race, De Vries won his second race of the year. De Vries battled for victory in both races of the London ePrix and ended in second position in both races, seizing the lead of the championship before the final round after two rounds in which he only accrued a total of two points. Despite finishing without a point in the opening race in Berlin, he was still able to hold onto the top spot in the standings. De Vries, who had qualified 13th for the season finale, gained an early lead when title contenders Mitch Evans and Edoardo Mortara collided at the start and Jake Dennis, another candidate, crashed shortly after the restart. De Vries, a Dutch driver, concluded the season with a total of two victories, four podium finishes, and 99 points, which put him seven points ahead of Mortara, the vice-champion, and gave him his first Formula E World Championship.

2021–22 season

De Vries won the opening race of season 8 in Diriyah, earned pole the next day but finished in 10th, and completed the championship in 9th with 106 points. De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne stayed with Mercedes for their final season in Formula E.

Formula One

In 2010 and 2016, De Vries received contracts with the McLaren Young Driver Program and the Audi Sport Racing Academy, respectively. Prior to the 2019 season, he left McLaren to concentrate on his responsibilities at Audi, where he remained until September 2019.

Test and reserve driver

De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne, teammates in Formula E, took part in their first Formula One test for the Mercedes team at the season-ending Young Driver Test in December 2020. He was paired with his Mercedes-EQ teammate Stoffel Vandoorne as one of the team’s backup drivers the following year.

At the Spanish Grand Prix in 2022, he participated in his first Formula One practice session, filling in for Alex Albon at Williams for the duration of the hour-long session. De Vries, who has won the world championship seven times, participated in another practice session at Mercedes in preparation for the French Grand Prix.

Race debut on loan to Williams (2022)

De Vries drove the Aston Martin in the first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix in place of Sebastian Vettel. After Alex Albon suffered appendicitis and was ruled out on Saturday morning, De Vries took Alex Albon’s spot at Williams. He was able to beat off his teammate Nicholas Latifi and qualify for Q2, although he started eighth when penalties were assessed to many drivers. In addition to earning points in his race debut and winning Driver of the Day, he crossed the finish line in ninth place.
