R.J. Hampton’s Parents: Meet Rod (Father) And Markita (Mother)

The foundation of Roderick “R. J.” Hampton Jr.’s prosperous basketball career lies with his parents. His father, who has been his full-time coach, has been his main source of support and has taught him all the fundamentals of the game from the beginning.

Roderick played for the National Basketball League’s (NBL) New Zealand Breakers prior to declaring for the NBA draft. On May 28, 2019, Hampton and the Australian team, the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL), reached an agreement for a multi-year contract with the prospect of a future NBA transfer (NBA).

The Milwaukee Bucks selected him as a five-star talent out of Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas, with the 24th overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft.

RJ Hampton Parents: Father Rod Is His Full-Time Coach

R.J. Hampton, an NBA player, was reared in Dallas, Texas, by his parents, Roderick Hampton Sr. and Markita Hampton. The 21-year-old has been trained by his father since he was a youngster.

There is always a tinge of Texas in Mairangi Bay because to the steady presence of his family. The most well-known basketball fan and game-attendant is R.J.’s mother. For R.J. and the entire Hampton family, it is everything.

Being his full-time coach, R.J. Hampton learns everything he knows about basketball from his father, who is far more knowledgeable than his son.

He has established himself in the sports industry with the help of his father. Also, he won the gold medal in the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship with the American under-16 national team.

He participated in five games, notching nine points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists

He won another gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup while competing for the national under-17 team, however he was only able to participate in two games due to foot problems.

Hampton averaged 7.5 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game, and 1.5 thefts.

His Grandmother Passed Away This September

Hampton posted many images of his grandmother on Instagram to inform his fans about her loss. He referred to his adoring grandmother as “MeMe,” a superwoman.

He also posted the message on his September 1, 2022, published profile. In the comments area, his friends and followers have expressed their condolences to his grandmother.

His grandpa, Richard Evans, had also served in the Vietnam War, according to his athletic profile.

Hampton’s Father Rod Is A Former College Basketballer

R.J.’s father, Rod, has been his AAU coach and trainer for the majority of his youth. Rod played NCAA basketball at the nearby SMU from 1987 to 1991.

Star local media said that his father made fun of R.J.’s mid-game substitution in 2018, stating it was the worst substitution a rival club could make. Rod joined the discussion among Redhawks fans after R.J. scored 29 points in the game against Liberty.

And to make matters worse, he argued that they had no idea what they were doing.

He said he was most proud of RJ as his son because without the two of them working so hard together, RJ wouldn’t be the player he is today.

Being his father and mentoring him in basketball have occasionally conflicted, but as R.J. has matured over time, the Hamptons have overcome that.

Basketballer R.J.’s Brother Ryan: The Family’s Next NBA Prospect

Like his older brother, R.J.’s younger sibling is putting a lot of effort into being the next NBA hopeful for the family.

Hampton was shouting shooting tips at him from the opposite end of the gym, where Dad Rod was coaching his younger brother. Ryan Hampton is on course to become the Hampton family’s second NBA prospect at the age of eleven.

The Hampton Family Never Misses His Games

R.J.’s family, which consists of his father Rod, a former NCAA basketball player, brother Ryan, and mother Markita, never misses a practice or a game.

To cheer on their son on the basketball court, the Hamptons are never far away. Similar to this, his mother Markita, who is active on Twitter, has posted a number of pictures on her page illustrating how pleased she is with her son’s accomplishments and career.

Since his first year of high school, Hampton has been on the varsity basketball team at Little Elm High School in Little Elm, Texas.

On November 17, 2016, he played in his first high school game. He led all scorers with 33 points as his team defeated Naaman Forest High School 78-52.

As a rookie, Hampton averaged 23.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3.5 steals per contest as he helped Little Elm to a 29-5 record and the District 14-5A title.

NBA Star R.J. Hampton’s Professional Career With New Zealand Breakers

On May 28, 2019, Hampton and the Australian team, the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL), reached an agreement for a multi-year contract with the prospect of a future NBA transfer (NBA).

He claimed that he decided against pursuing collegiate basketball because he wanted to “live like a pro, play with grown guys, and not have to juggle books and basketball.”

Hampton joined the Breakers through the NBL Next Stars program, which aims to develop NBA draft prospects.

On September 20 against Melbourne United, he made his professional debut, with 11 points, three rebounds, and four assists in 21 minutes.

Two days later, he had a season-high 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals in a loss to the South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Hampton fought back and defeated South East Melbourne by 11 points on January 5, 2020. He left the Breakers on February 4 to head back home and get ready for the 2020 NBA draft.

He Was Denver Nuggets 2020 NBA Draft

Hampton was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 24th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

But on November 24, 2020, a four-team transaction including the New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder saw the Denver Nuggets acquire Hampton’s draft rights.

Hampton Was Traded To Orlando Magic Last Year

The Orlando Magic traded Hampton, Gary Harris, and a possible first-round pick for Aaron Gordon and Gary Clark on March 25, 2021.

On April 4 against the Denver Nuggets, Hampton made his NBA debut after being chosen for the starting lineup. He recorded 16 goals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in 33 minutes.

On May 17, 2021, he was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for the month of May.

He became the latest Magic player to win Rookie of the Month honors, joining Dennis Scott, Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee Hardaway, Mike Miller, Victor Oladipo, and Elfrid Payton.

The Professional Career of R.J. Hampton

On May 28, 2019, Hampton and the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBL), an Australian team, agreed to sign a multi-year contract. Hampton has the right to switch to the National Basketball Association in the future thanks to a contract provision (NBA).

Because he wanted to “live like a pro, play with grown men, and not have to balance books and basketball,” he claimed that was why he decided against playing NCAA basketball. Additionally, he didn’t want to have to worry about juggling his studies and basketball.

After taking part in the NBL Next Stars program, which tries to develop players into NBA draft possibilities, Hampton joined the Breakers.

On September 20 against Melbourne United, he played 21 minutes and finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and four assists in his first game with a professional squad.

Two days later, on Sunday, in a game that the South East Melbourne Phoenix finally won, he set a new season best with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals.

On January 5, 2020, a rematch was held, and Hampton defeated South East Melbourne by an 11-point margin. He parted ways with the Breakers on February 4 so that he could return home and start getting ready for the 2020 NBA draft.
