Racing career

2005–2007: Beginnings

In the Legend Cars Series and the Bandolero Mini Cars series, Dillon started his racing career. He began competing on a dirt track at Dale McDowell’s school a year later.

2008: Camping World East Series

Dillon won the NASCAR Camping World East Series Rookie of the Year award in 2008. He initially completed the entire schedule in the No. 3 Chevrolet while racing for Andy Santerre Motorsports; but, after four events, he switched to his grandfather’s Richard Childress Racing team. In 13 races at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Dillon finished in the top ten ten times, including one win.

2009–2011: Camping World Truck Series

The No. 3 truck had not run in any of the three major series since Dale Earnhardt Jr. used it in the Busch Series back in 2002 when he made his debut in the Camping World Truck Series at Iowa Speedway.

During the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, Dillon was scheduled to start the Mountain Dew 250 at Talladega Superspeedway; however, the truck failed inspection, which resulted in the removal of his time and his failure to qualify for the race. Dillon would drive the No. 3 truck full-time in 2010 for Rookie of the Year, with sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops.

Dillon finished third and led 20 laps despite falling out early at Daytona, earning his first career pole at Texas Motor Speedway in June. For the first time since Bryan Reffner won for Team Menard at Texas Motor Speedway in 2000, Dillon won his first NASCAR race on July 11 in the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway. He finished the season with two victories and seven pole positions, earning him Rookie of the Year accolades.

At Nashville Superspeedway in 2011, Dillon achieved his first victory of the year. Dillon defeated Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick to earn his second victory of 2011 at Chicagoland Speedway. Rain cut the Homestead-Miami Speedway’s season finale short, and Dillon was declared the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. Additionally, he was named 2011’s Most Popular Driver by CWTS. He advanced to the Nationwide Series in 2012 and started driving the No. 3 Chevrolet for RCR full-time.

2011–present: Cup Series and Xfinity Series

On October 9, 2011, Dillon started his debut race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. In his No. 98 Camping World Curb/Agajanian Racing Chevrolet Impala, he came in 26th.

Dillon would be going up to the Nationwide Series in 2012, driving the No. 3 that Dale Earnhardt made famous, with support from AdvoCare, American Ethanol, and Bass Pro Shops, Richard Childress Racing announced on November 4, 2011.

2012

In 2012, Dillon participated in the Sprint Cup Series on a sparse basis. He began at Michigan International Speedway in June, when he raced the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. He started the race in twenty-first place and came in twenty-fourth.

Dillon won the Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway on June 29, 2012, dominating it by leading all but 8 laps and winning by more than 9.8 seconds from second place. The car, however, was declared to have failed post-race inspection because the rear ride heights were too low, according to NASCAR authorities.

In August 2012, Dillon took part in a single NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. While operating the No. 4 car for Fitzpatrick Motorsports, Dillon came in seventh.

2013

Dillon made the announcement in August 2012 that he would continue to compete in the Nationwide Series full-time in 2013, with Advocare serving as the primary sponsor for the entire campaign. He would also compete in seven Sprint Cup Series events that year, including the 2013 Daytona 500, where he qualified eighth but finished 31st due to a crash late in the race. It was revealed in January 2013 that Dillon would compete in select Sprint Cup events that year in Phoenix Racing’s No. 51 Chevrolet.

Dillon won the inaugural Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway after making a comeback to the Truck Series. He led a race-high 63 laps. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is home to the truck, the trophy, and the famous section of dirt track. Later that year, in the Truck Series contest at Chicagoland Speedway, Dillon replaced the injured Brennan Newberry.
