Born in New York City on November 30, 1965, Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller grew up in the Upper West Side. His father, the actor and comedian Jerry Stiller, was a member of an immigrant Jewish family from Galicia and Poland in Central Europe. After marrying his father, his mother, the actress and comedian Anne Meara, who came from an Irish Catholic family, converted to Reform Judaism. Although they “weren’t a particularly religious family,” they did celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah, and Stiller had a Bar Mitzvah.

When he was six years old, his parents frequently brought him along to the sets of their appearances, including The Mike Douglas Show. “In some ways, it was a show-business upbringing—a lot of traveling, a lot of late nights—not what you’d call traditional,” he said of his upbringing.
