Who was Yousef Makki? Everything on his Parents, Mum, Dad, Aged 17, What happened to him?

Yousef Makki, 17, was killed on a suburban Manchester street three years ago, but he remains a continuous presence for his sister Jade Akoum.

‘Some days I really struggle,’ Jade Akoum says of her schoolboy brother’s murder.

Three years after Yousef Makki’s fatal stabbing, his sister is still appalled by the way he was portrayed at his murder trial.

Yousef Makki, 17, was killed on a suburban Manchester street three years ago, but he remains a continuous presence for his sister Jade Akoum. At her home in Burnage, a portrait of Yousef has pride of place on the living room wall; her youngest son, now 18 months old, was named after him.

On the last anniversary of his death, the family set up a foundation in Yousef’s name, to provide financial support for other local working-class boys with dreams like his.

And Akoum spends every waking hour thinking about her brother. A protracted murder trial has already concluded, but Akoum believes it created more questions than it answered, much like the inquest that followed.

“We feel fed up with the system,” she says, a numbness to her voice. “I don’t trust anymore. I don’t have faith in the police, in the courts. The idea that we’re all equal and are treated the same regardless of class and money? I’m naive to have believed it.”

March Morning

On a drizzly March morning, Akoum sits on the sofa, tea in hand, with Mazen, her 14-year-old husband, as their child wanders in and out of the room. She finds herself revisiting the events surrounding her brother’s death: how he was stabbed on the evening of March 2, 2019, and the events that followed, which she believes resulted in a sequence of prosecutorial and police blunders. The coroner said at the inquest last November that the circumstances of Yousef’s death were so murky that she couldn’t even provide an open conclusion.

“Sometimes, I don’t mind talking about it at all – it’s like I need to,” Akoum says. “Other days I can’t face it and really struggle.” But it is a burden she has to shoulder. On Monday, Killed By a Rich Kid – a Channel 4 documentary two years in the making – will bring the story of Yousef’s death back into the public eye. When the documentary team got in touch, she didn’t hesitate about taking part. “It was our only way of getting someone to really investigate, with proper resources, what happened.”

Akoum, Yousef, and their two brothers all grew up in the neighborhood where she now lives. They were a close-knit group of people. Despite the fact that Akoum was 11 years of Yousef’s senior, the two had a special affinity. “I mothered him quite a lot,” she says, “always lecturing him and telling him what to do. Yousef was a wonderful youngster; we first discovered he wasn’t like other children when he was about three years old. He was mature for his age and always had others in mind.”

Yousef was athletic and intelligent, and his instructors at his public elementary school predicted that he would excel at one of Manchester’s prestigious – and pricey – independent institutions.

We come from a working-class area,” says Akoum. “None of us had been to them, we knew so little about them. We were all so hopeful for him.”

Who murdered Yousef Makki and what happened during the trial?

Joshua Molnar, a friend of Yousef Makki, murdered him. Despite being friends, they came from completely different backgrounds.

Yousef came from a poor Burnage family. Molnar, the well-educated son of wealthy Hale parents, stabbed him in the heart on a green lane in affluent Hale Barns on March 2, 2019. They were both 17 years old.

Molnar, now 20, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter during a trial later in 2019, claiming self-defense to the jury. He was found not guilty by a unanimous jury, but he was sentenced to a 16-month detention and training order after confessing to having the knife that caused the fatal injury and lying to authorities at the time.
